Once the sculpture is finished, it
must be packaged for shipping to
the installation site. This a very
important part of the process. It
is a place where a bit of
forethought during
design and
construction can
prevent disaster.
I always try to provide stable mounting
points and places where the sculpture can be safely held
during routine handling and shipping.
At left the hollowed out
granite base is carefully
lowered onto the earthquake
restraint which was fastened
to the lobby floor. The
restraint is intended to
prevent the piece from
sliding across the floor and
smashing someone against
the wall in the event of a side
thrust.
