The execution of a piece from concept to completion can be quite an involved
process, requiring the
services of other trades, engineers, subcontractors, etc. I try to maintain
direct control of as much
of the work as feasible.
The structural integrity and the safety of a piece
are also important considerations. At the left is a
shot of part of the stainless steel frame that we
installed inside the hollow bronze portion of the
sculpture. This was welded to the three stainless
pins which held the bronze in the stone. We also
had to hollow out the granite on this piece to
reduce the weight on the floor and then we had to
mount a plate in the bottom of the stone and epoxy
a specially engineered earthquake restraint to the
floor of the lobby due to the special code
requirements in San Francisco.
The woven metal pieces, such as the top layer of
"Ascending Spirals" shown at left, are hand wrought over
a paper pattern and then mounted.
