The Client: Conservation Solutions

Forging a new right arm for "Liberty" and restoring the hands of "Justice"

Restoration of  zinc statues from a court house in North Carolina.

Assembling the lower section :

At right I  make the final adustments on the part we made on the preveious page and cleco it onto the lower assembly. I am getting ready for the final fitting of the upper flag onto the lower part with the hand and arm.  I double and triple check the geometry and work out a plan of assembly before soldering the sections together.
Below I do a rough fit of the arm to the flag section, and determine that the flag is too round, check the pattern, it agrees. I flatten the cone section and it matches the shape, now the edges need to be trimmed.
Before I start cutting I want the bottom section totally stable, so I start soldering it together.

Checking the fit between hand and flag Checking fit on fingers and flag

At far left, I have hung the flag in position as part of one of my checks of the geometry . Near left, I have soldered up the seam inside the arm/flag.and attached the bottom fill spacer. Above I check on a small dent that I need to planish out before closing off access.

Now that I am confident the parts all fit, and are all smooth and fair. I solder them all together and remove the Cleco clamps.
