The Client: Conservation Solutions

Forging a new right arm for "Liberty" and restoring the hands of "Justice"

Restoration of  zinc statues from a court house in North Carolina.

Flag:

During installation we will need to mount the flag pole. That comes out through the bottom of the flag  in this picture.

To speed the install and make a good strong joint to support the pole, I formed a full contact lap solder joint around the edge.  This will facilitate the on site work.

The lap ends at a sharp break in the piece so a simple fill of solder and a file will hide the joint.

The pole location can be found and drilled into the bottom of the plug on site and then the plug soldered onto the piece.

At left beginning the time consuming task of a solder fit on a compound curve. The two parts are nested amd trimmed.

The next part of assembling the piece requires
forming the spacers that will fit between the arm
and the flag in all the odd spots. This can take a quite
a while  as the parts are convoluted and need
to mate with several surfaces.

They have to be made with the order of
assembly in mind. In fact all the pieces need to
consider that. As we come to final assembly
there must be a plan, because it would be
easy to "paint yourself into a corner" especially
when you aren't quite sure where all the corners
will be when you get to that point.

To do this I make use of clamps and temporary
fasteners so that I can build and fit all the parts in
subcomponents, and then join them in an orderly
fashion once I figure out where the most inaccessible
corner is and start to work out from there.
 .

The formed section is fit into place.

The spacer is test fit into the spot between arm and flag.

drilling to insert temp clamps   Cleco fasteners hold pieces in alignment

Above: Vice grip c clamps were used to hold the pieces together during initial assembly as
we needed to move things around to find the point where the parts mated and the
lines faired best.  I then drill holes and put removable Cleco fasteners in place. These will
enable me to take it apart and put it back together in exactly the same position.

Next
we will make a missing flag part
and fit it onto the piece.
